mental skills coaching basketball

Roger’s knowledge and commitment to mental skills in sports was evident from the start of our relationship. We knew how important the mental part of the game was to help our players and program continue to grow and have success on and off the court, but Roger helped us understand that the mental part of the game is a SKILL and needs to be practiced if we want it to improve. Roger has helped take our program to another level. The mental skills and techniques that we have learned are things that we now use in the program every day. He has traveled with us to games, attended some of our team’s special team events, or will meet over zoom if he can’t be there in person. Roger isn’t just throwing information at you… he genuinely wants to help your team and each individual on your team succeed. Roger is an extension of our coaching staff and a big part of Tiger basketball!

Roger Kitchen Jr. has an approach to mental performance skills that cuts to the core of an athlete's deepest challenges and struggles. His approach to his work is not a temporary fix, but rather, someone who takes the time to read between the lines and carefully craft a long lasting plan for his coaches and athletes that work. Roger's tailored programs can fit into any team's culture and desires for maximum achievement. I fully trust and am invested in Roger's work when it comes to training the mindset of optimal performance and greatness.

Our GRCC Men’s Basketball team worked with Coach K in the fall semester of 2022. Being a community college team, our players face the enormous pressure of trying to compete to win games, while also trying to showcase their abilities for 4 year coaches to see. With Coach K’s guidance, we reframed how we look at and discuss the every day challenges and pressures we face. We developed goals, talked through strategies, and had real-world opportunities to see what we were practicing put to the test. We were able to turn a 10-19 record in 2021 into an 11-0 start in 2022. Coach K was a huge part of that success, and the skills and abilities we learned continue to benefit us after his program is complete. We will continue to rely on his wisdom and guidance. I highly recommend working with Power Mental Performance, and I cannot wait to work with him again in the future.

The investment made by our program to incorporate Power Mental Performance into our preparation has paid dividends on and off the field. Coach Kitchen connects with our players in such a way that makes the lessons valid and the desired results within reach.

Roger did a great job with our baseball team in 2022 and 2023.  Our players definitely used his training this year (2024) on our way to win the 7A Championship. We wanted someone other than a "coach" to come in and talk to our guys about mental toughness and training.  It was great to have a different voice echoing the core values of our program.  In our anonymous end of year survey, our players overwhelmingly thought that Roger's program directly helped their mental performance and recommended bringing Roger back in the future.

Coach K has truly been a GAMECHANGER for Bob Jones Football! In the 2021, 2022, and 2024 seasons, our student athletes and coaches have benefitted greatly from his services. He has successfully educated our students on the value of being mentally focused and the importance of fighting through adversity. In addition, he has equipped our coaches and students with the knowledge needed to create a positive culture within our program. The services that he has provided have enhanced the athletic performance of our athletes and have highlighted the mental factors that will allow our program to be successful.

I recommend Power Mental Performance to any athletic program or individual with the desire to perform at an extremely high level for an extended period of time. Over the years, Coach K has given my teams and coaching staffs tools and systems that allowed us to play more freely by mastering our controllables and our non-controllables. Those systems helped with our attention to detail and increased our focus.

Roger was one of my first calls when I became a Head Coach.  He does an excellent job of painting the picture and showing our guys the importance of developing the mental side of our game. Our players benefit from his expertise while a part of our team, but will also benefit from the lessons he brings for the remainder of their lives. The growth I saw in our players in a short time was incredible, and I am excited to see where we go as we instill the principles and mental skills training Roger provides into the fabric of our program.  I am convinced that this is an overlooked part of program development and am thankful to have Roger as a part of our program.

The Warriors cannot thank Roger enough for helping our team learn the difference between the controllables and uncontrollables. The boys at Life Center Academy played against several top teams in the nation last season and we made it to the NCSAA National Championship game using the techniques Roger taught us during the pre-season. Additionally, Roger has helped one of our players on an individual basis and it has really helped his on field performance as he has matured greatly from a mental performance standpoint.

I cannot emphasize enough how much mental performance training has helped our on-field results. By making it a part of our 'process', we focus less on the results and better results come as a collateral effect. We are all looking forward to our next Power Mental Performance meeting this fall as we aim for another run at the national title.

Through the work with Coach K the team has changed meet feedback to focus on our four team controllables (FEAT). Athletes are able to identify which contrablles and uncontrollables they need to work on to improve for their next competition. Our team is more focused on process and we are seeing the results quickly! Parents have also commented how the athletes are more focused and had better first seasons swims then in the past. Mindset training has been integrated into every practice...our kids have always had an incredible work ethic, but the mindset training is making their hard work more efficient!

My college Coach, Travis Mash, connected me with Roger because of my aspirations to compete in the Olympics. The first time I talked with Roger, it wasn’t about my mental performance but about my goals, aspirations, and who I am as a person. He made it a prominent point to get to know who I was before helping me improve in the mental game. I have been working with him for three years and have progressed with great strides in every competition and he has shown me that regardless of the outcome, there is always something to be learned. Roger is not only there for an athlete's highs but will guide them through their lows by being there every step of the way.

Roger became an extension of our program just before the start of my sophomore season at Hampden-Sydney College. He has taught me so much over the last two years and I can honestly say that my performance has improved as a result of his teachings. I practiced mindfulness every day for the entire summer and saw drastic improvements in my confidence, my mental health, and my ability to stay neutral on and off the court. Roger and I practiced mindfulness together before a couple of games this season— we won both games and I played confident and free in both as well. I’m a firm believer in what Roger does and an advocate for how Roger does it!

I started working with Roger right after Junior Nationals this past summer. I had a hard time at that meet; I was extremely nervous, and I completely lost focus on what I needed to do in the moment. After I started working with Roger, he helped me realize that I didn’t have to feel that way when I compete. We worked together on why I got so nervous, what I could do to help bring my focus back, and how to change my day-to-day training routine to help me perform better when I walk out on the platform. With Roger’s help and guidance, I was able to compete again and actually enjoyed myself for the first time at a meet. I stayed calm, never "blacked out", and managed my nerves completely. I'd say that is a breakthrough no matter what I lifted. I didn't realize this was something I could work through for so long, and that feeling of hopelessness is gone. I’m forever grateful for the work we got to do together!

Roger Kitchen is the real deal! He has mentored and worked closely with my son, Kaleb, since his Junior & Senior years at James Clemens High School in Madison, AL. Roger played a major role in Kaleb developing the mentality, confidence, & leadership skills needed to be the starting Point Guard for a very competitive Class 7A basketball team. Roger's influence continued to the college level where he mastered challenging, yet encouraging Kaleb to endure & excel in college basketball. Roger Kitchen is a must to have on your team.

I started with Roger a few days after the fall season kicked off. I will never forget our first session because he took the time to get to know me as a person before we even started. From the beginning, I had some hope that he might actually be able to help me with my hitting.

What I found that started to happen was not only was my hitting improved, but my confidence was growing. I started to feel like my old self again. By the end of the fall season, my coach moved me to the front of the lineup and I was finally enjoying softball again.

I could never thank Roger enough for all he has done for me. I have come out of this season of my life stronger, more confident, and many would say a completely different player. This journey has changed me as a person for the better. I couldn’t have made a better decision than to work with Roger.
